Inclusive Books for Children (IBC) is a registered UK charity (No. 1201129) established in 2022 to promote access to inclusive literature for young readers. The organisation aims to ensure children encounter diverse perspectives through books, fostering open-mindedness and inspiration in the next generation.

Mission and activities

IBC curates and reviews inclusive children’s books for ages 1–9, offering a free online database of over 1,000 titles vetted by experts in education, librarianship, and publishing. Their work addresses underrepresentation in children’s literature, as highlighted by reports such as CLPE’s Reflecting Realities and BookTrust’s Represents, while maintaining editorial independence from commercial interests.

In June 2024, IBC launched a nationwide book-gifting initiative for state primary schools and community libraries, distributing curated boxes of 100 age-appropriate books (2–12 years) monthly to underserved communities. This program includes free resources for applicants and prioritises titles reflecting diverse characters and social justice themes.

Governance

The charity operates with a team of professionals specializing in children’s literature, diversity advocacy, and nonprofit management. Their review panel evaluates books based on inclusive representation, literary quality, and educational value.

Recognition

IBC introduced its inaugural inclusive children’s book awards in 2024, shortlisting 13 titles across categories celebrating marginalized voices. The awards aim to amplify stories addressing identity, disability, and cultural heritage.

Funding and impact

As a nonprofit, IBC relies on grants and donations to fund its book-gifting schemes, reviewer network, and public resources. Its initiatives target systemic gaps in access to inclusive literature, particularly in underfunded schools and libraries.
