The Club will close for the season on the weekend of Oct. 26 and 27. More to follow next month on the workday schedule for closing up. The Clubhouse is fully booked on the following dates: September 29 and 30 October 1 and 2 As always, Club Members may fish and use the Club’s facilities, including the bathroom and first floor of the Clubhouse on those dates, but be aware that the Club facilities will be busier than usual. Two white quilts that were on the twin beds in the middle bedroom on the North (non-pond) side of the Clubhouse have gone missing. If anyone knows where they are, please contact me or one of the other Club officers (Frost Hammond, Geoff Eckler or Laurel Tobiason). There have been some issues over the course of the summer with the use of the grill. Please check to be sure that the drip pan has a quarter to half an inch of water in it before you turn on the grill and be sure to give the same attention to cleaning up the grill that you do to cleaning up the stovetop and oven, so that the grill is ready to use by other Members and guests. Also, be sure to let the Volunteer Caretaker know that there is an empty propane tank whenever you switch out a tank. For the remainder of this season, the Club’s Board of Directors recommends that Members and guests do not use tap water from either the Clubhouse or the Caretakers’ cottage for drinking or cooking. The Club will continue to maintain a supply of bottled water on the floor of the Clubhouse Pantry that Members and guests may use for drinking and cooking. There will also be filtered water in both the Clubhouse and the Cabin. Members who host large gatherings or who will be staying overnight at the Club should bring their own bottled water for drinking and cooking to avoid any shortfall. The Board will revisit this issue at the end of the 2024 season. For the rest of the season, Members are required to take out all of their garbage when they leave. At least for the time being, the Club will continue to provide a recycling dumpster, but please remember to thoroughly rinse all containers that were used for food before putting them in the recycling dumpster. Under no circumstances should garbage be left in the recycling dumpster. Remember, Meccawe Members pick up after themselves and leave the Clubhouse and all the Club’s facilities clean and ready for use by other Members. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Due to the increased Black Bear activity along the Meccawe Road, two cans of bear spray have been left in the Caretakers Cabin for the use of Members or adult guests when hiking, mountain bike riding or burying fish guts. The bear spray should be handled only by Members or adult guests and only after the Member or adult guest has watched one of the instructional videos, available on YouTube, explaining how and when to use Bear Spray. Under no circumstances should children be allowed to handle the bear spray. The newly refurbished Old Town squareback canoe (built in 1947) is back in the water and available for use. The Club made a substantial investment in this very special boat. It is beautiful, wonderful to row, and a joy to fish in, but like all wooden boats, it requires special care and attention, only more so because of its age and history. In or to avoid damage to the finish, it needs to be kept covered when not in use, so if you use the squareback, please be sure to put the canvass cover back on when you are done. The Volunteer Caretakers schedule for the remainder of the season is as follows: August 25 through September 1: Frost Hammond September 1 through September 8: Geoff Eckler September 8 through September 15: Geoff Eckler September 15 through September 22: Nick O’Brien September 22 through September 29: Doug Harp September 29 through October 6: Megan Long October 6 through October 13: Thomas Jones October 13 through October 20: David Lodge Oct. 20 through Oct. 27: John Houlihan Thanks to all for your help. That’s the news for September. (fb)
