++ Triumph of Art at Trafalgar Square ++ A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for Triumph of Art in Trafalgar Square on Saturday, celebrating the National Gallery’s 200th birthday. Over 10,000 of you visited the William Morris marquee, where our amazing young ambassadors hosted creative activities all day long. They also proudly carried the Jeremy Deller “William Morris was right” banner in the parade that kicked off the event. 'Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful' installation by David Mabb. At Morris Mania. A collection of tea towels which feature reproductions of designs by William Morris and Morris & Co. The title of this artwork by David Mabb is deliberately ironic as many of the designs in the tea towels are badly reproduced. The designs' original 'Arts and Crafts' aesthetic, with its tradition of cultural authenticity, has been transformed in the production of cheap mass-produced goods. However, traces of Morris's design principles endure. The installation sets Morris's medieval vision of utopian pageantry against the banality of domestic kitsch See this installation on the ceiling of the Gallery's glasshouse Café from Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm.
