It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden and most unexpected passing of our beloved Nasim Zahir. Nasim, a Registered Social Worker, joined Changing Together in early 2000 as a volunteer and was subsequently hired as Coordinator of our Family Services program, focusing on the Prevention of Family Violence and the challenges of Bi-cultural Parenting in Canada. Nasim, a humble, soft-spoken, and compassionate counsellor, helped hundreds of immigrant women and their children escape the danger and harrowing experiences of domestic violence. In her inimitably gentle ways, she fought hard to persuade program partners like the Edmonton police, Canada immigration, Catholic Social Services women's shelters, the Jewish Family Centre, and government agencies of the urgency of each woman's situation and always succeeded in getting them help immediately. She also mentored many young female students who chose Changing Together for their practicum in Social Work and Community Support Work, with great patience and wisdom, establishing close partnership with Norquest College and Metro Continuing Education where she occasionally conducted workshops on Family Violence and Bi-cultural Parenting. She introduced us to the Ajoka Theatre and enabled Changing Together to use this art form to communicate, educate, and promote public awareness of many social issues like human trafficking, bullying, domestic violence, and mail-order brides. A prayerful and truly generous human being, Nasim had only the welfare of immigrant and refugee women in her heart, and she continued to serve even when funds and grants dried up for her program. Hoping to spend more time with her beloved husband and her grandchildren, she officially retired from Changing Together in June 2023. Dear Nasim, we will miss you and will always remember your selfless service to the immigrant and refugee women in Edmonton. (fb)
