🌺 Hummingbirds Return to the Maritimes! 🐦 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are making their return to the Maritimes after spending the winter in the tropics! AC CDC zoologist John Klymko joined CBC's Information Morning – Moncton today to talk about their eagerly awaited spring arrival. Hot off the press! A new study on the status of pollinators in North America found that nearly a quarter of species have an elevated risk of extinction. Bees are the most imperiled major pollinator group, with about 35% of the 472 species assessed as being at risk. The greatest concentration of imperiled species is in the southwestern US, which also hosts the highest diversity of pollinator species. 🦋🦇 AC CDC Zoologist John Klymko took part in the study, assessing the status of many of the flower fly (Syrphidae) species. While flower flies are one of the more secure pollinator groups, about 15% of the 295 species assessed face an elevated risk of extinction. Surveys conducted in the Maritimes by the AC CDC contributed significantly to the understanding of the status of many flower fly species. The study highlights the need for conservation action to protect our imperiled pollinator species, which are found across North America and throughout Atlantic Canada. The AC CDC continues to be involved in research on our region’s pollinators, including recent surveys for flower flies and bumble bees listed on the federal Species at Risk Act. 🐝 Check out the publication here: https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2418742122 (fb)

Welcome to the Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre The Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre AC CDC compiles and provides objective data about biological diversity in Atlantic Canada and we undertake fieldwork to further knowledge of the distribution and status of species and ecological communities of conservation concern. All our efforts are in support of conservationrelated decision making research and education. We serve the Atlantic Canadian provinces of New Brunswick Nova Scotia Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador and have offices in Sackville New Brunswick and Corner Brook Newfoundland. We receive direction from a Board of Directors that includes managers of biological diversity from the four provincial governments several federal departments and the nongovernmental conservation sector.
