Last night, May 17, at approximately 21:00 Station 1 was tasked by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) to assist two individuals who had become stranded on Whyte Islet due to rising tides. The weekend duty crew responded and were on the scene within 20 minutes. The two individuals were spotted at the Northwest corner of the islet and a plan was made to go ashore and retrieve them. Unfortunately retrieving them from the area they were in was not feasible so the crew chose to go ashore on the East side of Whyte Islet. The last of the daylight had completely faded by this time and conditions were very treacherous. The lack of light combined with the rain and slippery moss-covered rocks made traversing the islet difficult. However, they were able to connect with the pair quite quickly. They were in good spirits, albeit quite cold. They had misinterpreted the tide chart and were shocked to see the peninsula that connects the islet to Whytecliff Park submerged after spending a couple of hours shooting photographs. They did the right thing and dialed #727 on their cell phone. This, along with the alternative *16 puts you through to JRCC and is the correct thing to do in this situation. Attempting to swim in the dark or waiting out the tide could have led to a much more dangerous situation in the cool wet weather. Spirits were immediately lifted once they were on the boat warm and dry under a blanket. Our first responders on the crew concluded that no further care was needed and the pair were dropped off at the Horseshoe Bay Pier. 🛟🛟🛟 #searchandrescue #rcmsar #rcmsar01 #westvancouver #westvan #sar #CoastGuard (fb)
An interesting "heat map" of AIS equipped vessel traffic in Howe Sound and English Bay. Did you contribute to any of these tracks? We certainly did! (fb)
