Festival Antigonish Society
The Festival Antigonish Society is a Canadian nonprofit professional theatre organization based in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Established in 1987[1][2], it operates under the business registration number 886201599RR0001 and manages Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre, Nova Scotia’s longest-running professional repertory theatre festival[2].
Overview
The society produces contemporary theatre focused on themes of Canadian identity, social change, and inclusivity. Its artistic mission emphasizes gender parity, feminist issues, and diversity, creating work that reflects Canada’s cultural moment[1]. Productions are staged at the Bauer Theatre, a 220-seat venue on the campus of St. Francis Xavier University, which serves as the organization’s primary performance space and includes accessibility features, a bar, and outdoor patio[1][4].
Activities and Reach
Annually, the festival sells approximately 11,000 tickets, offering a Main Stage Series for adults and a Family Series for younger audiences[1]. Alongside original and adapted works, the society collaborates with local and national artists, fostering artistic development and community engagement[1][3]. It is recognized as a cultural anchor in Nova Scotia, contributing to regional tourism and economic activity[1][4].
Historical Context
While the Festival Antigonish Society dates to 1987[1][2], its operations are distinct from Theatre Antigonish, a community-based organization celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024[3]. The two entities share the Bauer Theatre and collaborate on programming, with the society’s professional productions complementing Theatre Antigonish’s community-focused work[3].
Cultural Impact
The festival’s repertoire includes award-winning plays such as adaptations of Sheldon Currie’s The Glace Bay Miners’ Museum and original works like Majd Al Zhouri’s To Eat an Almond, which explores refugee experiences[3]. Its commitment to innovation and local storytelling has solidified its reputation as a leader in Atlantic Canadian theatre[1][4].
The society receives funding from federal and provincial agencies, including the Canada Council for the Arts and Nova Scotia Culture Division, and operates as a registered charity[1].

This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship which Mikmaq Wlastkwiyik Maliseet and Passamaquoddy Peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1726. The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized Mikmaq and Wlastkwiyik Maliseet title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations. We are grateful to live and work in these beautiful lands.
