Saskatoon Council on Aging Inc.
The Saskatoon Council on Aging Inc. is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the dignity, health, and independence of older adults. As a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency under the Business Registration Number 130735756RR0001, SCOA operates with a clear mission to support positive aging for all members of its community.
History
The organization was formally established in 1991, following an initiative sparked by a federal health promotion workshop for seniors in 1988. This workshop, known as "Discover Choices," emphasized the need for coordinating organizations to support seniors in their local communities. This vision was brought to Saskatoon by Wilma Mollard, who, along with other like-minded individuals, worked towards creating a resource hub for older adults in the area.
Mission and Vision
SCOA's mission is to promote dignity, health, and independence through education, programs, services, and policy advocacy. The organization's vision is to achieve "Positive Aging for All in an Age-Friendly Community," where older adults can thrive with support and respect.
Programs and Services
SCOA provides a wide range of programs and services tailored to older adults aged 55 and above, as well as caregivers and those who work with seniors. These include:
- Resource Centre and Caregiver Information Centre: SCOA operates these centers to enhance the quality of life for older adults, offering resources and information on various aspects of aging.
- Age-Friendly Programs and Services: SCOA implements initiatives that promote an age-friendly community, fostering environments where seniors' voices are heard and valued.
- Educational Programs and Events: Regular events and classes are organized to educate and engage older adults, ensuring they have access to information and activities that support positive aging.
Advocacy
The organization advocates against ageism and ageist stereotypes, promoting human rights for older adults and working to prevent elder abuse. SCOA plays a crucial role in addressing challenges faced by older adults through policy advocacy, aiming to create a more inclusive and supportive community for all.
Governance
SCOA is governed by a board of volunteers, with the majority being older adults themselves. This governance model ensures that the organization's decisions and initiatives align closely with the needs and experiences of its target community.
Impact
By providing essential programs and services, SCOA contributes significantly to building an age-friendly community where everyone can thrive regardless of age. The organization's commitment to dignity, health, and independence has made it a valued resource for older adults and caregivers in Saskatoon and its surrounding areas.

Did you know? SCOA played a crucial role to bring about this initiative that supports aging in place. The program provides for low-income seniors, who are residential property owners and occupants, some relief of the financial hardship arising from general property tax increases by allowing for deferrals of tax increases on this property.
