Over the past decade, shifting economic, political, and social conditions have reshaped traditional approaches to lobbying and public relations. Yet, even in times of uncertainty, organizations can still develop their capacity to become highly effective advocates. In this presentation, we will explore practical strategies for advancing organizational interests. Effective advocacy does not demand vast resources or success at the expense of others; it requires creativity, charisma, humour, and unapologetic communication to demonstrate the societal value of museums and cultural heritage. Frank Finley is a government relations advisor and writer focusing on heritage with a special interest in the political future of the sector. He currently serves as the Public Relations Officer for the Museums Association of Saskatchewan and Heritage Saskatchewan through a joint partnership. Frank is a board member for the Lougheed House Museum and the Chinook Country Historical Society, and is the lead researcher for Lost Canada, a digital project showcasing forgotten architecture from across the country. Frank is also a member of the National Trust for Canada’s Federal Issues Working Group, where he has helped to develop political strategy. Frank is a former member of the University of Calgary Board of Governors, and has held positions in the Alberta Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Alberta Office of the Premier. He is deeply interested in forward-looking advocacy for Saskatchewan, and the unique opportunities presented by its cultural heritage sector. (fb)
