“I always said if I had the opportunity to join a trial I would say yes.” Violet (Vi) MacLean, a mother and grandmother from Quesnel, has been living with Stage 4 breast cancer since 2015. After nearly a decade of treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy and a rare drug that kept her cancer stable for seven years, Vi continues to face her diagnosis with hope and strength. This spring, she became the first patient to receive treatment through the BC Cancer Foundation–funded SIMPLIFY clinical trial. Early results show a positive response, with minimal side effects. The world-first study, led by Dr. Rob Olson, Executive Medical Director and radiation oncologist at BC Cancer – Prince George, has the potential to transform the way cancer is treated worldwide. For Vi, joining the trial is both an opportunity to continue her own journey and a way to give future patients the same hope she’s been given. Despite new challenges, including her husband’s recent cancer diagnosis, Vi remains optimistic, reminding others of the power of community and simple acts of kindness. (fb)
