Yesterday, CHF attended the Orange Shirt Day event hosted by The Confluence, in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Our team joined the community in listening, learning, and reflecting on the legacy and ongoing impacts of residential schools. The stories shared were powerful reminders of the importance of truth-telling and the collective responsibility we all share in advancing reconciliation. Following the event, we took time as a team to reflect on our experiences, discuss what we are learning through ongoing partnerships with Indigenous organizations, and what we will do differently because of that learning. These conversations are part of our continued commitment to learning, accountability, and meaningful relationship-building. On Truth and Reconciliation Day, we reflect on the legacy of residential schools, the harm they caused, and to acknowledge the ongoing impacts of the residential school system. That legacy lives on in many ways, including the overrepresentation of Indigenous Peoples in homelessness. According to Calgary Homeless Foundation’s 2024 PiT Count, Indigenous individuals made up 25% of the population experiencing homelessness, despite representing a much smaller portion of the general population. Among children and youth (ages 0–17), Indigenous children accounted for 50% of those experiencing homelessness. (Calgary Homeless Foundation, 2024 PiT Report) Reconciliation is not a single step or moment. It is a lifelong journey of learning, unlearning, and walking forward together in truth. We commit to giving, receiving, listening, and reaching out authentically—and in love.
