Standards Council of Canada
The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is a Canadian crown corporation established in 1970 to promote voluntary standardization in Canada. It operates under the mandate to advance the national economy, support sustainable development, enhance public health and safety, and facilitate both domestic and international trade.
Overview
The SCC is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, and operates with the mission of fostering and promoting efficient voluntary standardization across the country. It is funded partly by parliamentary appropriations and also generates revenue through accreditation services.
Responsibilities
The SCC is responsible for several key functions:
- Accreditation: The SCC accredits organizations involved in standards development and conformity assessment. This includes accrediting Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) and global certification bodies.

Governance and Operations

International Representation
The SCC represents Canada in international standardization organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
Standards Development
The SCC develops and implements the National Standards Strategy, a comprehensive plan to align voluntary technical standards with national social and business objectives. Over 12,500 Canadian volunteers contribute to the development of international standards through committees and SDOs accredited by the SCC.
Impact
Through its accreditation and standards development activities, the SCC contributes to increased competition in the certification market and helps reduce the time-to-market for products requiring certification.
