We were deeply touched by the incredible group we had the privilege of working with this past week in Courtenay — the Roots of Resilience. At the close of our time together, participants presented us with extraordinary handmade gifts that captured the very essence of what we teach: connection, creativity, and community. One piece featured tiny polished stones perched on a rope line, forming a flock of birds — each one unique, yet together representing courage, belonging, and the power of taking flight. A small stone cat even made an appearance, adding a personal touch that meant the world. Another gift, created by one of the group’s talented artists, was a stunning Coast Salish–inspired image of an orca rising toward the sun. The group added their fingerprints around the artwork, symbolizing how each person leaves their mark in shared learning. A small wooden circle accompanied it — representing “the core” of growth, connection, and the rings of impact spreading outward across Vancouver Island. Together with heartfelt written messages, these gestures remind us of what truly matters in our work: the relationships built, the learning shared, and the lasting connections formed along the way. Thank you, Roots of Resilience, for your generosity, your artistry, and your hearts. The impact of your learning — and your kindness — will continue to ripple outward. (fb)
Over the past five weeks, the Vancouver Island Crisis Society was honoured to partner once again with the North Vancouver Island Aboriginal Training Society (NVIATS) to deliver our third round of specialized crisis-intervention training for participants from North Island member Nations. This inspiring group completed certifications in: - Foundations of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention - SafeTALK (LivingWorks) - Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) (LivingWorks) - Communication in the Workplace - Responding to Mental Distress - Asking for Help - Managing Caregiver Stress Midway through the program, the group chose to name themselves "Roots to Resilience" — a reflection of their shared strength, growth, and community connection. They even designed a logo to represent their journey, created by participant and artist Ciaran Okun. Each participant brought courage, compassion, and commitment to this training — supporting one another, sharing stories, and growing together as future helpers, advocates, and leaders in their communities. We extend heartfelt gratitude to Sherry and Barbara at NVIATS for their continued collaboration, and to every participant who made this program such a meaningful success. Special thank you's to the Wachiay Friendship Centre Society for hosting and treating our group with so much love. 📸 (Featuring the Roots to Resilience logo by Ciaran Okun) (fb)
