Overview
YWCA NWT is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a safe Northern society where women and families can reach their full potential. Established in 1966, it has evolved from its origins as YWCA Yellowknife to become a leading provider of essential services across the Northwest Territories (NWT). In 2017, it adopted its current name to reflect its broader territorial reach.
Mission and Vision
YWCA NWT's mission is to build safe and equitable communities where women, girls, and families can realize their full potential. The organization's vision focuses on achieving equality for women and girls within these communities. As part of YWCA Canada, the country's oldest and largest women's organization, YWCA NWT is also affiliated with the World YWCA based in Geneva, Switzerland.
Services and Programs
The organization offers a variety of critical services to support women and families, including:
- Family Violence Shelters: Providing safe and anonymous spaces for women and their children fleeing violence.
- Housing: Offering transitional and emergency housing options to ensure stability and security.
- After-School Care and Youth Programs: Programs such as GirlSpace and Dudes Club focus on youth empowerment and engagement.
- Independent Legal Advice and Representation (ILAR): Established in February 2023, this program provides free legal advice and representation to survivors of sexual and/or physical violence, contributing to the implementation of recommendations from the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) inquiry.
History and Impact
Since its inception, YWCA NWT has been a cornerstone of support for northern families. Initially focusing on housing for single working women, the organization has expanded its services to address family violence, youth empowerment, and broader community needs. It is recognized as one of the longest-serving charitable organizations in the NWT, with over five decades of commitment to enhancing family well-being and advocating for equity.
