Preventing gender-based violence starts with the messages we give young people, especially boys. What they hear about emotions, power, respect, and relationships shapes how they treat themselves and others as they grow up. Too often, boys are taught the patriarchal notions of masculinity: be tough, strong, in control and never vulnerable. What if we shift the conversation to encourage healthy masculinity, where empathy, emotional expression, respect, and accountability are strengths, not weaknesses? Navigating the justice system can be one of the most challenging parts of a survivor’s journey. The process is often long, complex, and emotionally draining. For many survivors, it can bring up fear, uncertainty, and retraumatization. At Victim Services Toronto, we’re here to make sure no survivor has to go through it alone. Our trauma-informed support includes safety planning, help navigating legal services, and more. For those who need extra comfort, our Trauma Dog Program offers the calming presence of Penny during some of the most difficult moments. We’re also in the process of developing a first-of-its-kind post-court therapy program to better support young survivors well beyond the courtroom.
