Canada Day invites us to reflect on the stories we celebrate—and the ones we’ve yet to fully reckon with. As we mark Canada Day, we give thanks for the lands and waters we call home, and reflect on the living relationships that connect us across generations—past, present, and still to come. At #UBishops, we honour the diverse peoples who make up this country: those who have been here since time immemorial, those whose ancestors arrived by choice or force, and those who continue to arrive seeking safety, opportunity, and belonging. Learning at B.U. is grounded in fundamental human aspirations. Beauty, joy, hope and empathy are embedded in our Mission as we challenge all members of our community to positively change the world. As such, we recognize that Canada was built on dual foundations: one of exclusion and dispossession—through systems of colonization, racism, and inequity that continue to shape lives today—and one of hope, as many have come to these lands seeking refuge, opportunity, and the chance to build something better for themselves, and for generations to come. For many, this day is one of joy, pride, and connection. For others, it is a moment to pause, to reflect, and to imagine a country that fully lives up to its promise of inclusion. Today, we choose to celebrate not only who we are, but who we are becoming—a community committed to reconciliACTION and creating space for all to thrive.
