Today marks the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ People, sometimes referred to as Red Dress Day. Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ people face disproportionally higher rates of domestic violence, sexual assault, and homicide. This is not only a social and criminal issue — it is a violation of human rights. Every person has the right to live in safety and dignity. When violence is directed at individuals because of their gender or Indigenous identity, these rights are denied. When institutions fail to protect or respond, injustice deepens. The legacy of colonialism, systemic racism, and gender-based violence continues to harm Indigenous communities today. Awareness alone is not enough. Honouring the lives lost must be accompanied by action, advocacy, and a commitment to systemic change. Let us use not only today, but everyday, to amplify Indigenous voices, challenge the structures that perpetuate this violence, and support community-led efforts for justice and healing.
