Not all children use spoken words to communicate but that doesn’t mean they have nothing to say. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to any method of communication that supports or replaces verbal speech. This can include: 📸 Picture boards or communication books 🖐️ Sign language or gestures 📱 Speech-generating devices or apps AAC can be used short-term (while a child is developing speech) or long-term as their primary way to communicate. AAC can be used in the short term (while a child is developing speech) or long term as their primary means of communication.erstood, and participate more fully in daily life. It doesn’t stop or delay speech, it often helps develop it by giving children a way to express themselves, be understood, and participate more fully in daily life.
