The Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia
The Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia (ASNS) is a Canadian not-for-profit health charity dedicated to improving the quality of life for Nova Scotians affected by Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Founded in 1983, the organization serves over 16,000 individuals living with dementia and their caregivers across the province. ASNS is part of the Alzheimer Society Federation, a nationwide network consisting of ten provincial societies and the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
Mission and Vision
The mission of the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia is to alleviate the personal and social consequences of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias and to promote research aimed at finding causes and cures. The society provides leadership in addressing the challenges posed by dementia, strengthens existing programs, and develops new initiatives to meet evolving community needs. It also focuses on advancing educational opportunities related to dementia care and awareness.
Programs and Services
ASNS offers a range of support services including information dissemination, educational programs, and direct support for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. Services are tailored to regions within Nova Scotia, including Central Zone (Halifax area, Eastern Shore, and West Hants), Eastern Zone (Cape Breton, Guysborough, and Antigonish areas), Northern Zone (Colchester-East Hants, Cumberland, and Pictou areas), and Western Zone (Annapolis Valley, South Shore, and South West).
The society plays a significant role in providing resources designed to help families cope with the progressive and degenerative nature of Alzheimer's disease, which affects an estimated 17,000 Nova Scotians each year. Through education and support, ASNS aims to foster an informed and compassionate community environment for those affected.[1][2][3][5]
Affiliations
ASNS is affiliated with the Alzheimer Society Federation, connecting it to a larger framework of provincial organizations and the Alzheimer Society of Canada. This affiliation allows for coordination in advocacy, research, and resource sharing on a national scale.[5]
Statistics and Impact
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurological disorder affecting over 560,000 Canadians, with projections suggesting this number will rise to 2.3 million by 2031. The Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia addresses this growing public health challenge through its comprehensive services, supporting the increasing population affected within the province.[5]
Business Registration
The Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia operates under the business registration number 106705379RR0001.
