Native Counselling Services of Alberta

Native Counselling Services of Alberta is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the resilience of Indigenous individuals and families through programs and services based on interconnectedness, reconciliation, and self-determination.

History

The organization has its roots in a single Court worker program and has evolved over time to focus on providing social justice for Aboriginal people in Alberta. With over 45 years of operation, it has grown into a comprehensive agency offering a wide range of services.

Programs and Services

Native Counselling Services of Alberta offers a variety of programs aimed at supporting Indigenous people in different contexts:

  • Criminal and Youth/Family Courtwork Program: Provides assistance in navigating the criminal justice system, particularly for Indigenous youth and families.
  • Legal Clinic: Offers legal information and assistance to help Indigenous individuals understand and access justice.
  • Family Wellness and Addictions Programs: Focuses on holistic wellness, addressing issues related to family dynamics and addiction.
  • Parole, Probation, and Prison Liaison Services: Supports Indigenous individuals in corrections by facilitating communication and support during parole, probation, and incarceration.
  • Resource, Media, and Research Departments: Develops resources and conducts research to support Indigenous peoples' needs and advocates for policy changes.
  • Residential Correctional and Healing Centres: Provides an alternative approach to traditional correctional facilities, focusing on healing and rehabilitation.
  • Cunningham Place Youth Shelter in Edmonton: A safe haven for youth, offering support and services to help them overcome challenges.

The organization also operates under the framework of the Indigenous Family Courtwork Program, which provides support in both criminal justice and children's services across multiple locations in Alberta.

Initiatives

Native Counselling Services of Alberta also engages in educational initiatives, including BearPaw Media and Education, which offers multimedia resources about the law for Indigenous people in Alberta. Additionally, they have developed the Connections App, designed to support young adults transitioning out of care.
