New data from Statistics Canada confirms that Food insecurity in Canada has hit a record high. 1 in 4 people couldn’t afford enough food in 2024. This isn’t about food—it’s about income, inequality, and policy failure. We know what needs to happen. Now, we need political will. Here are 3 urgent actions the federal government must take: 1. Set a target: Commit to reducing food insecurity by 50% by 2030—with a clear plan and accountability. 2. Strengthen income supports: Expand programs like the Canada Disability Benefit and introduce new ones like a Groceries & Essentials Benefit. 3. Respect Indigenous food sovereignty: Work with Indigenous Nations to restore self-determination over traditional food systems. This is a crisis. But it’s solvable—if we act now. Good Food Organizations (GFO) are part of a national movement of more than 400 organizations fighting food insecurity and poverty from coast to coast to coast. The GFO program provides organizations with access to tools, resources, training, grants and networking opportunities to inspire and empower them to not only offer high-quality food programs, but also engage in regional and national actions. "With the support of the GFO program, we began connecting with local leaders and government representatives to advocate for our cause, which has opened new doors for collaboration opportunities [...] and has strengthened our ability to create sustainable change in the communities we serve. The GFO program has truly been instrumental in helping us grow and elevate our impact." - Fresh Routes (Calgary, AB) Read about Good Food Organizations here: https://cfccanada.ca/en/What-We-Do/Good-Food-Organizations (fb)
