Strengthening Community Through Food: Fort Nelson’s Impact Through the support of the Nutrition Link Services grant, Fort Nelson has fostered connection, improved food security, and provided valuable nutrition education all through the power of shared meals. Key Outcomes: Cook Eat Learn: 10 cooking classes, 142 participants learning essential kitchen skills, reducing food waste, and preparing nutritious, budget-friendly meals. Each participant left with both knowledge and a meal to take home. Dinner & Games Nights: 10 community gatherings, 156 attendees—bringing families together for a warm meal and engaging activities to strengthen social bonds. Total Impact: 298 people served through 20 events. Despite challenges like wildfires and illness, Fort Nelson’s dedication to food security and community engagement has been unwavering. These programs have exceeded expectations, growing in attendance and demand, reinforcing the importance of accessible, dignified food initiatives. Strengthening Communities Through Food Literacy At Nutrition Link Services Society (NLS), we are committed to enhancing food security and nutrition education in communities that need it most. This year, we are proud to support Pacific Immigrant Resources Society (PIRS) as a 2024 grant recipient, helping immigrant and refugee women gain essential food skills and build social connections. Key Program Achievements 📌 Food Skills for Immigrant & Refugee Women (May–June 2024) – Hands-on cooking sessions focused on affordable, nutritious meals. 📌 Community Garden Field Trips – Experiential learning about sustainable food systems and local agriculture. 📌 Summer Garden Fun Day – A family-friendly event fostering engagement, inclusion, and hands-on food education. Measurable Impact ✅ 17 women and 4 children participated, representing 14 countries and speaking 8 languages ✅ 30% were refugees, with the remainder being newcomers or temporary residents ✅ 41% had lived in Canada for under three years, demonstrating the program’s role in early settlement support ✅ Participants not only improved food literacy but also formed connections, reducing social isolation Beyond the Numbers: A Ripple Effect By equipping women with budget-friendly cooking skills and community support, the impact extends beyond individuals to their families and broader communities. P articipants now feel more confident in preparing nutritious meals, making informed food choices, and engaging in their local food systems.
