Ottawa Inner City Health, Inc.
Ottawa Inner City Health, Inc. (OICH) is a Canadian nonprofit organization established in 2001 to address healthcare disparities among individuals experiencing chronic homelessness in Ottawa, Ontario. Registered under business number 851839233RR0001, the organization operates through shelter-based healthcare units and partnerships with local providers to deliver equitable, evidence-based care rooted in harm reduction principles[1][2][4].
Mission and Vision
OICH's mission centers on improving health outcomes and quality of life for unhoused populations, particularly those with complex medical, mental health, and substance use needs[5]. Its vision emphasizes equitable access to healthcare and social supports to reduce homelessness[5].
Programs and Services
OICH operates nine shelter-based healthcare services, five supportive housing programs, and outreach initiatives, including specialized units within homeless shelters to provide integrated care[1][2]. Key services include palliative care, overdose prevention, mental health support, and chronic disease management. The organization reported reversing numerous overdoses and diverting hospital admissions through its Transitional Emergency Department (TED) program in 2023[1].
Leadership and Partnerships
Medical leadership includes Dr. Simon Hatcher, a psychiatrist and professor at the University of Ottawa, who serves as Medical Director of Psychiatry, and Dr. Rakesh V. Patel, a critical care specialist involved in clinical and educational initiatives[1]. OICH collaborates with shelters, hospitals, and community organizations to coordinate care and advocate for systemic changes[3][5].
Impact
OICH’s model prioritizes harm reduction and client-centered care, aiming to reduce barriers to healthcare access. By operating within shelters, the organization provides a safe environment for clients while improving health outcomes comparable to general Canadian standards[5][2]. Its approach has been recognized internationally as an innovative solution for marginalized populations[3].

Needle exchange boxes are a crucial harm reduction strategy! Last month, our Trailer Team Lead, Chad, launched a community project to bring people together through art. He divided the box into squares so community members could draw or write whatever they wanted. The needle exchange box outside Shepherds of Good Hope is now a vibrant piece of community art! 🎨✨ (fb)
