Why use a salt shaker when you could use tiny individual salt cellars with teeny spoons? Before the 20th century salt was sold in solid blocks that could be scraped for use. In 1911, they began to add anti-caking agents which led to free-flowing salt. At this point the use of salt cellars began to decline and were replaced with salt shakers. This set is still in its original satin-lined presentation box with individual depressions for 6 cellars and 6 spoons.
