Down Syndrome Association - National Capital Region
The Down Syndrome Association - National Capital Region (DSANCR) is a Canadian registered charity (Business Number: 133362806RR0001) dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with Down syndrome and their families in the Ottawa area and surrounding regions. The organization focuses on advocacy, education, and community-building initiatives to foster inclusivity and support.

Mission and Activities

DSANCR aims to be the primary resource for information and support related to Down syndrome. Its mission includes promoting awareness, facilitating access to resources, and collaborating with other organizations to strengthen support networks. Key services include:

  • Parental support: Offering mentorship, hospital visits for new parents, and informational sessions for caregivers and educators.
  • Educational programs: Hosting workshops, newsletters, and annual events like picnics to connect families.
  • Fitness initiatives: Structured exercise programs tailored for youth with Down syndrome, emphasizing skill development and physical activity[^1].

Membership is free for families in their first year, followed by an annual fee of $20. Adults with Down syndrome receive complimentary membership.

Governance and Affiliations

DSANCR operates under a volunteer-led board of directors and is affiliated with the Canadian Down Syndrome Society (CDSS) and Down Syndrome Association of Ontario (DSAO). These partnerships enable broader advocacy efforts and resource-sharing across provincial and national networks.

[^1]: Fitness programs include circuit training sessions with activities like sled pushes and battle ropes, designed for participants aged 10–14.
