With World Alzheimer’s Day approaching on Sept 21, it’s important to recognize both the global impact of dementia and the significant role of care partners. Across Canada, care partners are providing millions of hours of support every year to people living with dementia – and that number continues to grow. Sinai Health’s Reitman Centre for Alzheimer Support and Training is a leader in dementia care and support, and the provincial hub for the Enhancing Care for Ontario Care Partners program. Dr. Rhonda Feldman, mental health clinician at the Reitman Centre, highlights how these group programs provide care partners with practical tools, emotional support and problem-solving strategies, while fostering a sense of community. The Reitman Centre offers two group programs – CARERS, a skill-based group that provides practical tools, communications strategies, and emotional support using live simulation, and TEACH, an interactive group focused on self-care, resource navigation, the changing relationship, future planning, and learning from others with shared experiences.
