Learning Disabilities Association of Canada (LDAC) - Association canadienne des troubles d'apprentissage (ACTA)
The Learning Disabilities Association of Canada (LDAC), also known as the Association canadienne des troubles d'apprentissage (ACTA), is a national, non-profit, voluntary organization. It was established in 1963 and officially incorporated in 1971. LDAC serves as the national voice for individuals with learning disabilities and those who support them across Canada.
Mission and Activities
LDAC's primary mission is to ensure a level playing field for individuals with learning disabilities, enabling them to function as citizens with equitable opportunities and to develop to their chosen potential. The organization accomplishes these goals through public awareness about the nature and impact of learning disabilities, advocacy, research, education, and collaborative efforts. LDAC collects and disseminates information in areas such as prevention, early identification, assessment, education, intervention, social interaction, health, coping skills, family support, advocacy, transitions, and employment.
Structure and Reach
LDAC has a presence in each province and two territories of Canada, extending a network of chapters in more than 75 communities. This widespread presence allows LDAC to offer cutting-edge information on learning disabilities, practical solutions, and a comprehensive network of resources, making it the leading resource for information on learning disabilities in Canada.
Publications and Projects
LDAC has published several manuals, guides, self-help, and reference books tailored to meet the needs of individuals with learning disabilities. Additionally, LDAC has been involved in projects such as the "Putting a Canadian Face on Learning Disabilities" (PACFOLD) initiative, which aims to identify and verify the impacts of learning disabilities.
Status as a Registered Charity
LDAC is recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) as a registered charity with the business registration number 119010312RR0001. As such, it complies with CRA's requirements and relies on donations to support its mission of empowering individuals with learning disabilities.
History and Milestones
Celebrating 60 years of service, LDAC began as a grassroots movement by dedicated parents of children with learning disabilities who formed support groups to exchange information and resources. Over the years, LDAC has evolved into a robust national organization dedicated to promoting inclusive practices and advocating for equitable opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities.

Meet our Speakers! Melissa Flynn Drin Hozo! Melissa is a Tr'ondek Hwech'in citizen from the Yukon. She grew up fishing, hunting and berry picking with her parents, grandmother and aunties. Melissa has worked in Education in the Yukon for the last 14 years as a Hän language teacher, Vice Principal and now as the Executive Director of the newly formed First Nation School Board. Melissa has the honour of working with our Yukon learners, families, First Nation Governments and school teams delivering an enriched learning experience that is embedded in local culture and worldview. Megan Norris Megan was born and raised on Treaty 6 Territory in central Alberta, the traditional territory of the Cree, Dene, Blackfoot, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, and Métis people. She is the great-great-granddaughter of European settlers with Dutch, English, and Irish ancestry. Megan began her career as a teacher and speech-language pathologist in Edmonton, Alberta. In June 2021, Megan moved to the traditional territory of the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council and Kwanlin Dün First Nation in Whitehorse, Yukon, to work as a speech-language pathologist with rural Yukon First Nation communities. In the fall of 2022, Megan joined the First Nation School Board as the Lead Literacy Coach to support the creation and implementation of FNSB’s Literacy Plan. Guided by the wisdom of Yukon First Nation communities, the science of reading, and literacy leaders across the country, the FNSB Literacy Plan outlines an equitable and sustainable path forward for Yukon learners; a path that recognizes and celebrates every student has the right to learn to read. In the fall of 2023, a literacy team was created to support educators in implementing strong instructional teaching practices that are research- and evidence-based and reflect local knowledge. Megan is constantly inspired by the land, the students, and the communities she has the privilege of getting to know. She believes humility, compassion, and curiosity are at the heart of this work and is grateful to be part of this journey. https://conference.ldac-acta.ca/ (fb)
