Campus Food Bank Society
The Campus Food Bank Society is a Canadian nonprofit organisation dedicated to supporting the University of Alberta community by providing food assistance and promoting equitable food access. It is registered with the business registration number 892414566RR0001.
History
The Campus Food Bank Society was established in response to the financial challenges faced by international students due to high tuition fees. It served its first clients in 1991, marking the beginning of the oldest campus-based food bank in Canada. Initially supported by the Graduate Students' Association, it quickly received co-funding from the Students' Union. In 1994, the organisation became a registered Canadian charity with an independent board of directors.
Mission and Vision
The society envisions equitable food access across the University of Alberta campus community. Its mission is to champion immediate and systemic food accessibility for all members of the U of A community. This involves addressing both immediate needs through food distribution and advocating for systemic changes to reduce food insecurity.
Programs and Partnerships
The Campus Food Bank Society provides a range of supplementary food programs along with educational initiatives aimed at promoting food security among students, staff, their dependents, and recent alumni. It is a member of Food Banks Canada and adheres to their Ethical Food Banking Code. Additionally, it is a Good Food Organization of Community Food Centres Canada, following their Good Food Principles.
Client Base and Challenges
The majority of clients served by the Campus Food Bank are graduate students. Other significant client groups include international students and individuals facing various forms of marginalization or financial strain. The organisation acknowledges that systemic barriers, such as low income and limited access to resources, are primary drivers of food insecurity among its clients. Recently, concerns about rising costs of living, including rent increases and stagnant minimum wages, have further highlighted the need for their services.
Values
The organisation values innovation, perseverance, and community involvement. It fosters a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and included, and it encourages collaboration to achieve its goals.

Hey artists!! Our competition for mural pieces will be closing on February 23rd. Here is your reminder to send in your proposals!! We are so excited to showcase your beautiful work on our community pantry🍎❤️ (fb)
One of the most common questions we receive about our operation is: “Where does all your food come from?” We thought it might be fun to give you a mini tour of how we bring food into our spaces each week... Four days a week, a pair of CFB volunteers hop into the Student Union’s cargo van and drive across town to Edmonton’s Food Bank. There, the volunteers pick through options available in the EFB warehouse and collect food that our clients will want. Typically, volunteers bring about 500 pounds of food per day back to our food bank. We often send the van to Wholesale Club at the same time to supplement donations with purchased food staples like rice and oats. One of the CFB staff team drives down to Food Banks Alberta’s warehouse in Leduc monthly to pick up pallets of food. We usually receive two non-perishable pallets of food like canned vegetables, cereal, rice, and snacks, as well as one frozen, perishable pallet of food like chicken, beef, and reheatable meals. Pallet jacks aren’t allowed in SUB so we unpack all pallets in the parking lot and shlep them into our offices on carts. There are many other sources of food that we receive! We occasionally get donations from large companies like The Little Potato Company, and we often get rescued food donations from the Leftovers Foundation. We have a fruitful annual partnership with Prairie Urban Farm on South Campus; they donated more than 2,000 pounds of produce in 2024. We also purchase food from Costco and Sysco. As you can see, it is quite a patchwork! We depend a lot on our amazing volunteers to move all this food into the food bank. We currently have more than 130 student and alumni volunteers who help us out every week. Thanks to them, and to all of our sources of donated food, we’re able to distribute more than 5,500 pounds of food each week to our clients. Thank you for reading. Stay tuned for more information on our Fresh Food February 2025 campaign to raise support for the purchase of fresh produce and protein until spring arrives! (fb)
