Courtenay Little Theatre Society
Overview
Courtenay Little Theatre Society, a Canadian nonprofit organization, has been a cornerstone of community theatre in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. With a rich history dating back to the 1920s, it officially adopted its current name in October 1960, evolving from the Comox Valley Drama Club.
History
The roots of Courtenay Little Theatre trace back to the formation of the Courtenay Dramatic Club by Sid Williams in the 1920s. After World War II, the club was revived as the Comox Valley Drama Club. In 1960, it was formally renamed to Courtenay Little Theatre, reflecting its base in Courtenay and aspirations for more professional productions[1][2].
Activities and Mission
Courtenay Little Theatre Society is dedicated to providing opportunities for community members to discover the joy of theatre. The organization produces three major shows annually, including dramas, comedies, and musicals, which are performed at the Sid Williams Theatre in Courtenay[4][5]. Beyond productions, the society offers workshops and other events to enrich the theatrical experiences of its members and the broader community.
Purposes and Impact
The society's mission encompasses several key objectives:
- Cultural Development: Contribute to the cultural landscape of the Comox Valley by promoting theatre arts.
- Community Engagement: Emphasize the importance of drama and arts in community life and recreation.
- Education and Support: Provide resources and opportunities for educational growth in theatre arts, including sponsoring bursaries for students pursuing post-secondary education in the performing arts[5].
Status and Recognition
Registered as a charity with the Canada Revenue Agency under the number 886274398RR0001, Courtenay Little Theatre Society benefits from charitable donations that support its community-focused initiatives[5]. The organization collaborates with similar theatrical groups on regional, provincial, and federal levels to enhance its impact in theatre arts[5].

CLT’s 65th Season Opens with Darkly Funny and Moving “Kimberly Akimbo” at the Sid Williams Theatre Courtenay Little Theatre is thrilled to open its milestone 65th season with Kimberly Akimbo — a darkly funny, heartwarming play by Pulitzer Prize–winning writer David Lindsay-Abaire. Running October 1–5 at the Sid Williams Theatre, this smart, off-beat, comedy is about growing up — and growing old. Set in 1999 New Jersey, the story follows Kimberly Levaco, a lippy 16-year-old who just happens to look like she’s 72 due to a rare genetic condition. Between family dysfunction, a first crush, and a scheme that may or may not involve a crime, Kimberly must figure out how to live life to the fullest — fast. Director Lisa Williams has assembled a powerhouse cast of five talented local actors: • Kirsten Harris as Kimberly, a teenager with an edgy sense of humour and zest for life • Mezzo Waite as Jeff, her nerdy friend and unlikely accomplice • Max Wallace as Buddy, Kim’s well-meaning but often-drunk dad • Anthea Morritt as Pattie, her very pregnant, very dramatic mom • Allyson Leet as Aunt Debra, a fast-talking scam artist with a heart and a plan The cast says Comox Valley audiences will recognize themselves and their families on stage. “Life is fleeting,” says Harris. “Every family will see someone they recognize on stage.” Castmates agree that the play’s mix of humor and heart is what makes it unforgettable. “I think people will relate to the real life dynamic of this dysfunctional but loving family” says Wallace. Morritt calls the show “both a comedy and a drama,” comparing to the TV series Shameless. Waite adds “It plays on the meaning of what youth is both in casting and writing.” Leet sums it up: “This show deals with real, deep, and relatable family relationships and…. following your dreams - in a funny, and strange way.” With its mix of laugh-out-loud comedy and gut-punch emotion, Kimberly Akimbo has been called a “gem of a show” that resonates with teens and adults alike. Tickets are on sale now at sidwilliamstheatre.com or by email (tickets@sidtheatre.com) or phone (250-338-2430). Don’t miss four evening performances (Oct. 1–4) plus a final Sunday matinée (Oct. 5).
