Orillia Vocal Ensemble

The Orillia Vocal Ensemble is a Canadian nonprofit organization and a community choir based in Orillia, Ontario. It was established in 2010 by its founding director, Roy Menagh, initially to accompany the Orillia Wind Ensemble (now known as the Orillia Concert Band) at a Christmas concert. Following the success of that performance, a core group of singers decided to continue the ensemble under the umbrella of the Orillia Wind Ensemble before eventually becoming a separate entity.

Mission and Activities

The choir's mission is to provide both a joyful and educational choral experience for its members and to benefit the local community by raising funds for non-profit organizations. They achieve this through regular concerts and performances, often collaborating with other regional performing arts groups. Over the years, the Orillia Vocal Ensemble has contributed significantly to local charities, raising over $200,000 since its inception.

Charitable Work

The ensemble supports a variety of local charities, including Mariposa Hospice, Orillia Community Foundation, Jubilee House, Sharing Place food bank, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Hillcrest Lodge, Greenhaven Women's Shelter, and Information Orillia, among others. Additionally, they participate in events such as singing at retirement homes during Christmas.

Operations and Structure

As of its establishment, the choir quickly grew and became a registered charity. It consists of over 70 singers and includes a chamber choir. The ensemble operates with a SATB (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) full voice structure, welcoming new and returning singers.

Leadership

Katie Pergau has been associated with the ensemble as a noted musician and accompanist. She has also served as the organist and choir director at Burton Ave United Church and as an accompanist for the King Edward Choir.

The ensemble's performances include collaborative events with groups like the Orillia Community Children's Choir and the Orillia Concert Band, contributing to cultural events such as "Culture Days" and Christmas concerts.

Charity Registration

The Orillia Vocal Ensemble is registered as a charity with the registration number 826359978RR0001.
