Toronto Baptist Seminary and Bible College
Toronto Baptist Seminary and Bible College is a Canadian non-profit institution located in Toronto, Ontario. Established on January 4, 1927, it began as a church school serving Jarvis Street Baptist Church and surrounding congregations in Ontario and Quebec. The institution was founded during a period of theological controversy, aiming to provide conservative theological education emphasizing Baptist doctrines.
History
The seminary was conceived in response to the Fundamentalist-Modernist controversy of the 1920s. Dr. T.T. Shields proposed the establishment of the seminary in an influential article published in The Gospel Witness on August 27, 1925. Since its inception, the institution has trained students for pastoral ministry and other roles in Baptist churches across Canada and beyond. Initially known as Toronto Baptist Seminary, it officially changed its name to Toronto Baptist Seminary and Bible College in 1985.
Governance and Recognition
The institution is governed by a board of trustees and a Senate comprising faculty members and administrators. It received official recognition as a degree-granting institution in 1982 through Bill PR 44 passed by the Ontario legislature. Despite this recognition, Toronto Baptist Seminary had conferred theological degrees since its founding.
