The Canadian Art Song Project
The Canadian Art Song Project (CASP) is a nonprofit Canadian organization dedicated to the performance, promotion, recording, and commissioning of Canadian vocal music in the tradition of art song and song cycles. Founded in 2011 by tenor Lawrence Wiliford and pianist Steven Philcox, CASP is based in Toronto and focuses on fostering the creation and performance of Canadian art song repertoire by engaging composers, poets, performers, and audiences in collaborative artistic processes[1][2][4].
Mission and Activities
CASP's mission is to encourage the ongoing development of Canadian art song by commissioning new works from Canadian composers specifically for Canadian singers. Their efforts facilitate collaboration between composers and performers to promote artistic excellence and highlight the Canadian cultural experience in the living art of song[2][4].
The organization actively commissions new music, produces recordings, and hosts performances to showcase Canadian vocal music. Among their notable projects is the album Known to Dreamers: Black Voices in Canadian Art Song, which celebrates contributions by Black Canadian composers and writers, recognized with a JUNO Award nomination[2].
CASP also engages in innovative projects such as animated shorts linked to art songs, and offers educational conversations and blogs to deepen public engagement with the genre[2].
Charitable Status
The Canadian Art Song Project is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency under the business registration number 837426089RR0001. As a registered nonprofit, CASP complies with CRA requirements to support its mission through public donations and fundraising activities[4].
Impact and Recognition
CASP is recognized for enriching Canada’s musical landscape by preserving and expanding the country's art song repertoire. Their recordings, performances, and public outreach contribute significantly to raising the profile of Canadian art song domestically and internationally[2][4].

Our latest animated short, The Piece Atop His Pate, has arrived! https://youtu.be/Csj4zIAGw64 Inspired by Jocelyn Morlock’s humorous song "Bobby Hull" (from her cycle Perruqueries), with words by William Richardson. It’s a playful reimagining of one of hockey’s quirkiest moments, blending art music, late 1970s CBC broadcast nostalgia, and Hanna-Barbera–style animation. Listeners may even catch an unmistakable nod to The Hockey Theme by Dolores Claman, the soundtrack of Saturday night hockey for generations of Canadians. Created in collaboration with OCAD University’s Department of Experimental Animation, The Piece Atop His Pate continues CASP’s exploration of how music and visual storytelling can intersect, following the success of The Wild Goose (2024). 🏒 Music performed by: Keith Lam, baritone and Steven Philcox, piano (CASP Co-Artistic Director) 🏒 Animation by: OCAD University students in the Dept. of Experimental Animation Learn more here: https://www.canadianartsongproject.ca/the-piece-atop-his-pate-animated-short/ #Hockey #Animation #Canadian #Art #Song Canadian Music Centre (fb)
