No one should be forced to overheat in their own home or care home. 💔 A CBC investigation this week reveals that Newfoundland and Labrador has no rule requiring cooling systems in long-term care or personal care homes, even as summers grow hotter and heat warnings break records. “Seniors are the most vulnerable population, and heat stroke can cause death in over 50 per cent of cases in seniors,” said Samantha Pomroy, a family doctor and chairperson of the local chapter of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment. Doctors warn that heat stroke kills up to half of seniors who experience it, and residents report “unbearable” indoor temperatures lasting for days. Yet only Ontario has laws mandating air conditioning in care homes but no province yet sets a legal maximum indoor temperature to protect residents.
