SeaChangeMarineConservation
The **SeaChange Marine Conservation Society** is a Canadian nonprofit organization focused on marine conservation and coastal ecosystem restoration. Founded in 1998 by Nikki Wright and Sarah Verstegen, the organization works to mitigate human and climate-related impacts on coastal environments through research, habitat restoration, and community engagement.
### History
Established with an initial focus on eelgrass transplantation in SṈIDȻEȽ (Tod Inlet, British Columbia), SeaChange expanded its efforts over two decades to include large-scale ecological restoration projects across the Salish Sea. In 2022, it acquired the ShoreZone program, a habitat mapping system developed in 1979, to enhance nearshore conservation planning. ShoreZone’s database includes mapped coastlines of British Columbia, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, and parts of the eastern United States.
### Projects
- **Eelgrass Restoration**: Beginning with 1,800 shoots transplanted in 2000, SeaChange has restored critical eelgrass habitats, which serve as nurseries for marine species and stabilize shorelines.
- **ShoreZone**: The program provides publicly accessible maps and data supporting oil spill response, habitat conservation, and coastal management.
- **Marine Debris Cleanups**: Initiatives such as underwater debris removal in Cadboro Bay (2024) target pollution affecting marine ecosystems.
### Approach
The organization emphasizes community participation, collaborating with volunteers, Indigenous groups, and government agencies to restore native vegetation and eelgrass beds. Its work integrates scientific research with hands-on restoration, aiming to balance ecological health and human activity in coastal regions.

Low tides are a great way for us to get an up-close glimpse at the underwater world, but they are also important for foraging and predation opportunities by other animals! Pictured here is a great blue heron hunting in an eelgrass meadow during low tide. This bird was successful in catching a few gunnels. Great blue herons are incredible hunters, with one study finding that they have an estimated catch rate of over 90% in estuaries. They primarily eat fish, but will also hunt amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals. 📷 Kendra Nelson (fb)

Education Conservation and Restoration of the Marine Environment Connecting Ecosystems Cultures and Communities We believe communities are the heart of conservation and restoration. From the most vulnerable ecosystems to the most resilient we strive to understand measure and mitigate the impacts of human activity and climate change on coastal ecosystems for the benefit of all communities. Whether mapping the British Columbia shoreline connecting with volunteers and donors at special events or collecting biodiversity data as part of our newest Resilient Estuaries of the Salish Sea initiative we combine scientific methodologies with a passion for protecting vulnerable ecosystems in the coastal communities we call home. Learn More We Get Things Done Building awareness for change since 1998 In 1998 Nikki Wright and Sarah Verstegen began building a legacy for conservation work in the Salish Sea founding SeaChange as a notforprofit organization with a vision to make a difference in peoples attitudes and behaviour towards the ocean.
