Los Angeles–based composer, vocalist, and producer Julianna Barwick creates ethereal reflective sounds rooted in the human voice. Her largely wordless soundscapes, built from layered vocal loops, are hypnotic and transportive. Barwick returns to Vancouver with a new live AV show drawing on music from her brilliant 2020 album, Healing is a Miracle. Vancouver ambient legend loscil rarely performs live but, when he does, it is a singular opportunity to become immersed in the swirling depths of his signature sound. For this special VIFF Live performance, loscil offers a new live AV set comprising music and visual work drawn from his moving, meditative 2025 album, Lake Fire, inspired in part by bearing witness to a season of BC’s raging wildfires. VIFF 2025 Half Moon: Kinan Azmeh October 6 + 11, 2025 Tickets: https://viff.org/whats-on/viff25-half-moon-kinan-azmeh/#book The act of artistic creation can feel inadequate when trying to convey the tragedy of war, but for clarinettist and composer Kinan Azmeh, music is a way to bear that grief and break down the boundaries of emotional and cultural expression. A witness to lives lost and displaced in his home country of Syria, Azmeh questions what role he can play as an artist and musician in a face of global conflicts and violence. Frank Scheffer’s introspective documentary follows Azmeh on his travels to New York, Amsterdam, and Palestine, where the artist’s soulful music and collaborative performances enrapture audiences through outpourings of emotional urgency. Half Moon: Kinan Azmeh is a profound and celebratory meditation on art’s ability to inspire different cultures and reshape solidarity, community, and hope in the world, even in dark times. (fb)
