One Ocean Expedition seeks Inuit educators for summer teaching jobs. As part of the One Ocean Expedition (https://www.oneoceanexpedition.com/), UiT The Arctic University of Norway has chartered the Norwegian tall ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl to sail through the Northwest Passage in summer 2025 (https://en.uit.no/one-ocean). A inter- and trans-disciplinary course entitled "Arctic Future Pathfinders" will be organized on board the ship by researchers from all faculties at UiT, who will also conduct their own research during the voyage. The course provides a space to study the future of the Arctic, and is co-organized with Knowledge Holders from the Sápmi region in Norway. We are recruiting two Knowledge Holders from Inuit Nunangat or Kalaallit Nunaat for each of the legs. The course will run twice, from August 4 starting in Nuuk, Kalaallit Nunaat until August 29 ending in Iqaluktuttiaq/Cambridge Bay, Nunavut; and from August 2 starting in Iqaluktuttiaq/Cambridge Bay until October 4 ending in Whittier, Alaska. We are looking for two Knowledge Holders that can join as educators one of the legs each and help diversify the perspectives of the course run on board and the project in general, starting at earliest convenience. We are looking for Knowledge Holders that can convey Indigenous knowledge to non-Indigenous and Indigenous youth under the broader goal of the course, imagining futures for the Arctic. They are encouraged to share their own ideas and initiate activities for enhancing Indigenous perspectives on board. During the course schedule on board, around every 3rd day participants will engage in Indigenous-related topics, which the candidates are free to design together with the Sami knowledge holders and the course coordinator. The input that the course participants gain will be integrated together with all other topics in an interdisciplinary setting around every other day. Preparation time before and after the cruise will be compensated on an hourly basis (380,40 NOK/hour, approx. 51,36 CAD/hour), while the participation in the cruise will be compensated on a daily basis (as 8 hours per day). This is the salary regulation for the position code "university lecturer" in the Norwegian public sector. The persons will work closely together with two Sami knowledge holders and the Indigenous People's Secretariat, and the project coordination team. The Knowledge Holders that will join the cruise should be comfortable living under modest conditions along with all other participants and educators on board for one month (sleeping in hammocks in one large common room under deck, shared bathrooms, working in shifts for duty work on the ship in addition to course work) If interested in either of these positions, please contact Melania Borit at: melania.borit@uit.no (fb)
