Vancouver Philharmonic Society
The Vancouver Philharmonic Society operates as a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting symphonic music within the community. It is registered with the Business Registration Number 119282093RR0001.
History
The Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra, supported by the Vancouver Philharmonic Society, has its roots dating back to the early 1960s. During this period, two string orchestras, the Dunbar Community Centre Orchestra conducted by Jean Glazer and the Jewish Community Centre Orchestra led by Jerry Glass, merged to form the nucleus of the orchestra. The addition of wind players in the mid-1960s transformed it into a full symphony orchestra. Initially, it was incorporated as the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra in 1966 and later renamed the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra in 1972[1].
Mission and Activities
Since its inception, the organization has been committed to enriching lives through live music experiences. It has played a significant role in supporting Canadian composers by performing both new and existing works. Over the years, the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra has premiered and commissioned numerous new compositions, contributing to the Canadian music scene.
The Vancouver Philharmonic Society also supports emerging artists through various initiatives. Notably, since the 1990s, it has run the Wallace Leung Memorial Assistant Conductor Internship, providing mentorship opportunities for young conductors working with a full symphony orchestra. Additionally, the Concerto Competition for Emerging Artists was launched in 2011, allowing music students to rehearse and perform with the orchestra[1].
Membership and Structure
Today, the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra consists of over 50 musicians, a mix of amateur and professional artists of all ages. The organization's longevity is a testament to the dedication of its founders, members, and supporters who have contributed to its growth over five decades[1].
Impact and Legacy
The Vancouver Philharmonic Society continues to play a vital role in Vancouver's cultural landscape by providing accessible symphonic music to a diverse audience. Through its commitment to Canadian talent and community engagement, the organization remains a valued part of Canadian arts heritage.

It's back once again, the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra is presenting a Youth Concerto Competition this coming season! We are truly excited about the competition returning this coming season and we hope that you know students who would be interested in participating. The competition is open to serious young, amateur musicians who play any instrument (cello, piano, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet...there are no limitations). Six finalists will have an opportunity to perform one movement of a concerto with a full-sized symphony orchestra. In addition, cash prizes for the winners will be awarded on the evening of the competition. Preference will be given to students who are serious about pursuing a career in music. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at vancouver.philharmonic@gmail.com. When you send your question, please include your full name, your instrument, and your question. We will answer as quickly as possible. WHO CAN APPLY: Eligible applicants must either be registered full-time in a secondary or post-secondary institution, or they must be under the age of 19. HOW TO APPLY: Interested applicants must submit the following: • Application Form (request an application from vancouver.philharmonic@gmail.com) • Recording(s) of you performing one work, or preferably two contrasting works. The recording does not need to be the same piece you intend to perform live for the competition (though it is recommended), but it must demonstrate your ability and should be of similar difficulty to the proposed performance piece. The recording quality need not be professional. Links to online audio or video recordings is preferred (e.g., YouTube), but we will also accept CD/DVD/USB recordings mailed to the address below. • $25 application fee payable by e-transfer to vancouver.philharmonic@gmail.com, or by cheque or money order made out to “Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra” and mailed to the address PO box 38044 King Edward RPO Vancouver, BC V5Z4L9 Applications must be received no later than November 8, 2025. COMPETITON: A review committee comprised of VPO members will select up to six finalists from among all of the applicants. The finalists will be invited to perform one movement of a concerto (maximum duration: 15 minutes) with the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra in front of a live audience. The piece of music selected should be available through public domain sources (e.g., imslp.org). If it is not, the finalist may be asked to provide the orchestral music. There is no specified repertoire list to choose from, but the orchestra reserves the right to require applicants to choose different pieces, if necessary (e.g., in the event that two or more finalists select the same work, one will be asked to perform an alternate selection). Finalists must be available to attend two rehearsals on Wednesday nights leading up to the final competition, as well as the Friday night dress rehearsal on February 20, 2026. The competition will take place on Saturday, February 21, 2026, 7:30pm at Shaughnessy Heights United Church, 1550 West 33rd Ave, Vancouver. PRIZES: A panel of judges will announce the winners at the end of the concert. The first place winner will be awarded $500, plus an additional $500 from the David Clark Performance Development Award for further music lessons, training, or education. Second ($250) and third place ($100) prizes will also be awarded. All six finalists will receive a professional audio recording of their performance. (fb)
