The Canadian Opera House Corporation (Business Registration Number: 888747177RR0001) operates as the organizational entity behind the Canadian Opera Company (COC), the largest and a leading professional opera company in Canada and one of the most significant in North America.

History

Founded in 1950 originally as the Royal Conservatory Opera Company by Nicholas Goldschmidt and Herman Geiger-Torel, the company quickly established itself as a vital cultural institution in Toronto. Within the same year, it was renamed the Opera Festival Association of Toronto. By 1959, it had adopted the name Canadian Opera Association, performing as the Canadian Opera Company from then on. The name was legally changed to Canadian Opera Company in 1977.

Under the leadership of Herman Geiger-Torel, who served as general director from 1960 until his retirement in 1976, the company grew in stature and artistic quality. Lotfi Mansouri succeeded him and expanded the company’s subscription base and operating budget significantly during his 12-year tenure. Subsequent leadership included Brian Dickie, who focused on musical standards and production quality, and Richard Bradshaw, who as general director secured funding for the company's new home, the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, inaugurated after more than four decades performing at other venues like the O'Keefe Centre.

The Canadian Opera Company was a pioneer in technological innovation in opera, introducing surtitles (supertitles) in 1983, the first opera company to do so, which enhanced audience accessibility to performances.

Development and Contributions

The company emerged from the Royal Conservatory Opera School established in 1946, part of the University of Toronto Opera Division. Early productions were instrumental in building public support, leading to the formal inauguration of the company.

The COC established an ensemble in 1980 to foster young Canadian talent, providing training and performance opportunities. This commitment to nurturing Canadian opera talent has been a hallmark of the organization.

Venue

The Canadian Opera Company’s performances have been staged in various venues throughout its history, most notably spending 40 years at the O’Keefe Centre (also known as Hummingbird Centre and Sony Centre for the Performing Arts). Since then, the company has been housed in the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, a major architectural and cultural landmark in Toronto designed specifically for opera and ballet performances.

Notable Figures

  • Nicholas Goldschmidt and Herman Geiger-Torel: Founders and early leaders, critical to the company’s establishment.
