Athol Murray College of Notre Dame

Athol Murray College of Notre Dame is a private, co-educational boarding high school located in Wilcox, Saskatchewan, Canada. It was founded by the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis in 1920 as St. Augustine school when they established Notre Dame of the Prairies Convent. The school was later renamed to honor Father Athol Murray, a pivotal figure in its development and growth.

History

In 1920, the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis established the Notre Dame of the Prairies Convent and St. Augustine elementary and high school in Wilcox. In 1927, Father Athol Murray, a Roman Catholic priest, was assigned to the village of Wilcox, where he played a significant role in transforming the institution. Under his leadership, Notre Dame became a classical college officially affiliated with the University of Ottawa in 1933.

Father Athol Murray was known for his innovative approach to education. He accepted students based on their desire to learn rather than their ability to pay. To cover tuition costs, he often accepted forms of barter such as produce or livestock. This approach allowed students from diverse backgrounds to attend, making Notre Dame a unique educational institution.

Education and Sports

Athol Murray College offers education to students in Grades 9 through 12. The school emphasizes both academic growth and athletic development. It is renowned for its sports teams, notably the Notre Dame Hounds, which have achieved significant success in hockey, football, and baseball.
