Propeller Dance
Propeller Dance is a Canadian nonprofit organization specializing in contemporary inclusive dance and diverse performance practices. Founded in 2007 and based in Ottawa, Ontario, it is recognized as a leader and innovator in the field of integrated dance in Canada. The company is dedicated to creating, teaching, and presenting dance that includes artists of all abilities, fostering a broad range of expression and emphasizing the value of diverse human experiences.
History and Mission
Since its establishment in 2007, Propeller Dance has pioneered the genre of contemporary inclusive dance, a discipline that integrates dancers with and without disabilities. The organization challenges traditional notions of virtuosity and disability, emphasizing presence, connection, and human spirit as core elements of performance rather than focusing solely on physical capability. Propeller Dance's mission centers on the belief that dance is accessible to everyone and that diversity in dance enriches the art form and promotes social inclusion.
Artistic Approach
Propeller Dance creates transformative artistic experiences that defy traditional expectations within the dance community. Their work draws on multiple established techniques from improvisation, theatre, and contemporary dance genres to showcase the beauty and power of diverse bodies and minds collaborating on stage. The company defines virtuosity expansively, valuing emotional and spiritual connection as essential components of performance. Disability is approached as a difference in human experience, not as a limitation.
Activities and Programs
Propeller Dance engages in a wide range of activities including professional performances, dance training programs, workshops, and educational outreach. The organization serves children, youth, and adults, offering classes and opportunities for new dancers, teachers, and artists to collaborate. Through its performances and educational initiatives, Propeller Dance reaches thousands annually and contributes to a national arts ecosystem that values inclusivity and diversity.
Recognition and Impact
Acknowledged as Ontario's only professional integrated dance company, Propeller Dance plays a vital role in advancing inclusive arts in Canada. The company has garnered respect for its socially engaged work and its commitment to excellence in dance and interdisciplinary performance. Its innovative approach influences both the dance community and broader cultural conversations about accessibility and representation in the arts.
Leadership and Personnel

On this day of Truth & Reconciliation, we honour the ongoing impact of the residential schools system on Indigenous people and communities. As a settler-led and disability arts organization, we continue in solidarity and commitment to understanding the ongoing impacts. As a community, Propeller Dance aims to contribute to healing through understanding and acting on the 94 calls to action. Today we highlight Indigenous people and Indigenous-led organizations by amplifying their voices and events in our stories. Join us in continued remembrance, mourning, and further action. Our office and studio are closed today for our staff and artists to take time to reflect, learn and take action. Thank you to Andy Iverson for generously creating and sharing this Every Child Matters artwork. (fb)
July is Disability Pride Month! At Propeller Dance, pride means celebrating disability as a powerful part of identity, something to express, embody, and move through with joy. As a disability and queer-led organization, we are proud every day to champion inclusive dance, challenge societal norms, and create spaces where all bodies belong. This month (and always), we honour the history, resilience, artistry, and activism of the disability community. Disability is not a limitation. It's a force of creativity, community, and change. Some dancers are using wheelchairs, while others are standing or barefoot. They are all dressed in coordinated blue and orange-toned costumes with individual variations in cut and pattern. The dancers are actively engaged in expressive movement, with dynamic postures that convey energy, joy, and connection. The stage floor is marked with geometric white lines, and a large projection of intersecting white rectangles is visible on the backdrop. The atmosphere is intimate, immersive, and playful, with a warm, theatrical lighting that highlights the individuality and unity of the performers. A stylized Disability Pride flag spans the bottom of the image, featuring diagonal stripes in pink, yellow, white, blue, green, and gray, symbolizing disability identity and pride. (fb)
