Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day—a day to celebrate and recognize the history, culture, and resilience of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. June is also National Indigenous History Month. This year, we want to highlight just a fraction of the wealth of incredible Indigenous theatre. Th’owxiya: The Hungry Feast Dish by Joseph A. Dandurand Integrating masks, song, and dance, Th’owxiya is about an old and powerful spirit that, despite being surrounded by a delicious feast, only craves the taste of children. It is a tale of understanding boundaries, taking responsibility for one's actions, forgiveness, and standing up for what's right. Women of the Fur Trade by Frances Koncan A historical satire of survival and cultural inheritance that highlights women's power through the lens of the rapidly changing world during the Canadian fur trade. White Noise by the late Taran Kootenhayoo A comedy about an Indigenous family and a white family having dinner together for the first time during Truth and Reconciliation Week. Exploring cultural misunderstanding and colonialism, it asks "How do we deal with internalized racism?" Performing Indigeneity edited by Yvette Nolan & Ric Knowles A volume about Indigenous performance, featuring essays by Indigenous artists and academics. Women of the Fur Trade, Th'owxiya: The Hungry Feast Dish, and Performing Indigeneity are available for purchase at PlaywrightsCanada.com and White Noise is available at talonbooks.com.
