Arts Club of Vancouver Theatre Building Society
Overview
The Arts Club of Vancouver, often referred to in the context of its theatrical arm, the Arts Club Theatre Company, is a Canadian nonprofit organization founded in 1958. Initially, it operated as a private club for artists, musicians, and actors. In 1964, it evolved into the Arts Club Theatre Company under the guidance of Yvonne Firkins, a prominent figure in British Columbia's theatrical community.
History
The Arts Club Theatre Company began its journey in a converted gospel hall on Seymour Street in downtown Vancouver. This 250-seat venue was instrumental in launching the careers of notable Canadian performers such as Michael J. Fox, Bruce Greenwood, Ruth Nicol, and Brent Carver. During its 27-year tenure at this location, the company produced a variety of performances, including gritty new plays and long-running hits like Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris.
In 1972, Bill Millerd took over the company, which was then producing four shows annually with a modest budget of $150,000. Over the years, the Arts Club continued to grow, moving to larger venues. In 1979, it relocated to a 450-seat theatre on Granville Island and later acquired the Revue Theatre. The 1990s saw significant expansion with the takeover of the historic Stanley Theatre, which allowed for the production of larger musicals.
Expansion and Growth
By the late 1990s, the Arts Club had become a major force in Vancouver's theater scene. The move to the Stanley Theatre in 1998 marked a significant milestone, enabling the company to produce larger-scale productions such as Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, and Billy Elliot. In 2015, the Arts Club further expanded with the opening of the BMO Theatre Centre in Olympic Village, a state-of-the-art facility shared with Bard on the Beach.
Today, the Arts Club Theatre Company is recognized as the largest not-for-profit urban theater company in Canada and the largest in Western Canada. It continues to contribute to Canadian theater by premiering new works and staging classic performances.
Legacy and Impact
The Arts Club has played a pivotal role in fostering Canadian talent, both by showcasing works from local playwrights and by providing early career opportunities for renowned actors. Its dedication to a diverse programming schedule ensures a wide range of theatrical experiences for audiences.
Venues
The company operates across several venues, including the Granville Island Stage, the Revue Stage, the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, and the BMO Theatre Centre. Each location allows the Arts Club to cater to different theatrical styles and audience capacities.
Conclusion
The Arts Club of Vancouver Theatre Building Society, through its theater company, has established itself as a cornerstone of Vancouver's cultural landscape. Its commitment to diverse programming and support for emerging talent has contributed significantly to Canadian theater history.
