Overview

The Zenwest Buddhist Society is a non-profit organisation located in Sooke, British Columbia, Canada. It was formerly known as the Victoria Zen Centre. The society is dedicated to promoting and practicing Zen Buddhism in a dynamic and inclusive community environment.

History

The organisation was incorporated as a non-profit entity in the province of British Columbia and registered federally as a charity in November 1980. It was recognized as an independent religious body in British Columbia in May 2009. Kosen Eshu Martin, Osho, serves as the teacher of the Zenwest Buddhist Society.

Practice and Tradition

Zenwest follows the Hakuin Rinzai tradition of Zen Buddhism. The society offers training for both non-residential and residential members. The practice schedule includes various activities aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of Zen principles within family and community life.

Community and Activities

Zenwest provides a range of activities designed to be inclusive for its members and the broader community. These activities include weekly meditation sessions, individual spiritual counselling, participation in educational initiatives such as those at the University of Victoria, and hosting retreats and Dharma talks. The society is also involved in koan study, which is a key component of Rinzai Zen practice.
