Task Report! On Tuesday evening, we responded to a report of a capsized canoe on Kal Lake, with 1 person in the water! With crew for 2 boats, we trailered and launched from Kekuli Bay Provincial Park. On our arrival at the canoe, we learned that a passing kayaker had witnessed the situation and made their way over to assist, but with limited success. They were eventually joined by a passing pontoon boat, and with a full flotilla of Good Samaritans, they were able to get the canoe righted and the paddler out of the water. We rounded out the ordeal with a transfer of the paddler and canoe to our boats for some dry blankets, a checkover by our first aid personnel, and then a quick ride back to the boat launch. We really want to offer a thank you to the passing boaters for noticing the situation and your willingness to offer help. But even more importantly, we want to commend this paddler for wearing their life jacket! So often we see this not the case, and the outcome could have been so much worse, even though all the other stars lined up with unseasonably warm weather, remaining daylight, favorable lake conditions, and other boaters on the lake. ATV Training - A Night Ride! With daylight fading as autumn marches on, we figured it was high time for an evening run with our ATV crew, and Terrace Mountain was the perfect venue. There's nothing better than the cloak of darkness to make an otherwise familiar area seem oddly unusual....distances feel longer, visual references disappear, and erosion ditching jumps out at you at the last minute! Of particular note, that spare clothing we encourage everyone in the outdoors to always bring with them came in very handy...it's surprising how much cooler it can get with just a little altitude gain and some wind. And yes, it is still dusty out there, so a special thanks goes out to our those on our crew that returned full of smiles the following morning to help get all that dust off. (fb)
