Coastal Missions Society
The Coastal Missions Society was a Canadian nonprofit organization registered as a charitable entity (Business Registration Number 106950561RR0001) under the category "Advancement of Religion." Established in 1980, its mission focused on advancing Christian evangelism and fellowship along the coastlines of British Columbia and Alaska through maritime outreach[1][3][4].

History

Founded by a group of missionaries seeking to continue the work of earlier maritime ministries, Coastal Missions Society emerged after the Shantymen’s Christian Association concluded its mission boat operations in 1968[5]. The society initially operated a second-hand wooden vessel before commissioning the purpose-built steel ship Coastal Messenger in 1999, designed specifically for coastal ministry[5]. The vessel conducted annual missions to remote communities and islands, emphasizing Christian education and community engagement[1][5].

Operations

The society’s activities centered on visiting areas with limited access to churches, providing worship services, discipleship programs, and practical support to coastal residents[2][4]. Funding relied entirely on donations, and operations remained non-commercial[1]. In 2020, the ministry marked its 40th anniversary but faced challenges related to crew retirements and logistical constraints during the COVID-19 pandemic[5].

Transition to Coastal Light Vessel Ministry

In 2022, Coastal Missions Society announced its closure effective December 31, 2022, transferring its maritime operations to Coastal Light Vessel Ministry, a new initiative under International Messengers Canada Society. The transition ensured the continued use of the Coastal Messenger for coastal outreach[1][5]. The rebranded ministry retained the original mission’s focus on evangelism while emphasizing relational ministry and scriptural engagement[5].
