THE COOKING FIRE THEATRE FESTIVAL
THE COOKING FIRE THEATRE FESTIVAL (Business Registration Number: 861750966RR0001) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to the presentation and celebration of original theatre works. Established under the name River Clyde Arts, the organization adopted its current name in 2023 to better reflect its primary activities centered on theatre production and festival organization[1][2].
History and Background
The Cooking Fire Theatre Festival originated as an outdoor summer theatre event held in Toronto’s Dufferin Grove Park. Since its inception, the festival has showcased a diverse range of theatre companies presenting original, often experimental plays with an emphasis on engaging community audiences in an informal, outdoor setting[3][5].
Over the years, the festival has become known for its unique format, combining theatrical performances with communal meals made from locally sourced ingredients. These dinners, prepared by volunteers, create a social experience that complements the performances and fosters a sense of community[5].
Artistic Programming
The festival features a variety of short plays and performances that often explore innovative theatrical forms and narratives. Notable participants have included acclaimed theatre companies and artists whose work spans absurdist to physical theatre styles. For example, the festival has presented works such as The Little Farm Show, a collaboration between New York-based NACL Theatre Company and Toronto actors, which integrates themes of organic farming and daily rural chores into its storytelling[4].
In addition, the festival has welcomed influential theatre practitioners like performer/creator Kiersten Tough, known by the stage name The Spee Society, who has been involved with the festival in multiple roles including hosting and performing since its early years[4].
Community and Cultural Impact
The Cooking Fire Theatre Festival is recognized for its affordable and accessible approach to theatre, attracting a broad audience including families and children. Its intimate setting in Dufferin Grove Park, combined with an interactive atmosphere where audiences can dine and then follow performances across multiple stages, distinguishes it from conventional theatre festivals[5].
The organization’s commitment to using locally grown food in its communal dinners also highlights its dedication to sustainability and community-building through cultural events[5].
THE COOKING FIRE THEATRE FESTIVAL continues to operate as a charitable organization under Canadian governance, maintaining its mission to enrich the cultural landscape by promoting innovative theatre and fostering community connections through shared artistic and culinary experiences[1][2].
