Arborg & District Multi-Cultural Heritage Village Inc.

Overview

The Arborg & District Multi-Cultural Heritage Village Inc. is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and showcasing the multicultural history of rural life and farm communities in the Interlake region. Located near the Icelandic River, the village spans 12.9 acres and features a collection of historic buildings, promoting an understanding of the diverse cultural heritage of the area.

History

The village was established on February 15, 1999, with a mission to highlight the rich multicultural background of its region[2][4]. The area's settlement began in the late 19th century with Icelandic pioneers, followed by significant growth after scouts from North Dakota arrived in 1900. The establishment of a Canadian Pacific Railway line in 1910 facilitated rapid development, turning Arborg into a regional hub for trade and commerce[2].

Facilities and Programs

The heritage village includes 16 restored historic buildings, an Aboriginal encampment area, a Ukrainian outdoor bake oven, and a 1921 CPR caboose. It offers guided tours and self-guided visits, allowing visitors to explore homes, churches, schools, and other historical structures. The village celebrates a variety of cultures, including Icelandic, Ukrainian, Polish, and Indigenous, providing educational experiences for children and a nostalgic visit for seniors[4].

Operations

The village operates seasonally from mid-May to the September long weekend, offering both daytime and specialized events. It also features a campground with electrical campsites, washrooms, and a shower building, making it a popular destination for both learning and leisure[1][3].

Community Involvement

The Arborg & District Multi-Cultural Heritage Village is supported by strong community involvement and collaboration with local government, ensuring its mission to preserve and share the history of the area continues to thrive[4].
