Shawnigan Lake Historical Society
The Shawnigan Lake Historical Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of Shawnigan Lake and its surrounding areas.
Mission and Vision
The society operates under the mission of honoring the past, celebrating the present, and building the future. It aims to connect both the local community and visitors with the historical and cultural experiences of Shawnigan Lake.
Museum Operations
The society manages the Shawnigan Lake Museum, which serves as a central hub for historical information and exhibits. Located in the heart of Shawnigan Village, the museum has been celebrating the history of the area for almost 50 years.
Historical Significance
The museum features extensive information and interactive displays on significant historical aspects such as:
- Kinsol Trestle: An engineering marvel that highlights the region's industrial past.
- E.J. Hughes: A renowned Canadian artist who had ties to the area.
- The Last Spike: Part of the historical narrative surrounding the construction of railways on Vancouver Island, which played a crucial role in the region's development.
Community Engagements
The society fosters community involvement through volunteering, participation, and donations. It emphasizes the importance of preserving the area's cultural heritage and honoring its history on the ancestral and unceded land of the Hul'q'umi'num speaking people.
Visitor Experience
Visitors can enjoy a variety of historical exhibits, interactive displays, and a gift shop offering unique items. The museum also acts as an unofficial tourist information center for the South Cowichan Valley area.
Additional Historical Preservation
In addition to the main museum, the community also benefits from the Shawnigan Lake School Museum, which focuses specifically on the history of Shawnigan Lake School. Established in 2002, this museum showcases over 5,000 items detailing the school's evolution and personal histories of its alumni and staff.

1970s - 4 views of the "Galley" The Prenevost Years Rollie and Jacquie Prenevost took over the "Galley" from the Hamilton Family. During their era, the Galley/Marina was a place for coffee, food, boat (and aviation) gas and marine supplies...also a destination for the nearby Strathcona Girls School. The Galley was also a source of local employment for many and was a popular destination spot for locals, summer residents and visitors. The Prenevosts retired in the late 1980s, and were celerated at a Community celebration in the Old Community Hall. (fb)
