Incorporated Synod of the Diocese of Ontario

The Incorporated Synod of the Diocese of Ontario is a legally recognized entity under Ontario law, specifically within the framework of an Act respecting its incorporation[1][4]. It operates as part of the Anglican Church of Canada, within the Ecclesiastical Province of Ontario. This diocese is one of seven in Ontario, along with Moosonee, Algoma, Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara, and Huron[4].

Legal Status

The Diocese of Ontario is incorporated, which means it has both legally recognized rights and responsibilities. Its structure and operational rules are outlined in the Canons, requiring compliance with both Canadian and Ontario laws[1].

Mission and Activities

The Diocese of Ontario is guided by its mission, which is rooted in Jesus Christ, holy scripture, and the liturgies of the church[3]. The diocese's strategy includes three primary branches:

  • Investment in Ministry: Focusing on the development and support of the church's ministries.
  • Community Service: Engaging with and serving the communities where its parishes are located.
  • Mission-Driven Stewardship: Emphasizing responsible management of resources in line with its mission[2].

Governance and Structure

The governance of the Diocese of Ontario is overseen by its Synod Council, which includes both ex-officio members and elected representatives from various deaneries. Ex-officio members include the Bishop of Ontario, the Diocesan Executive Officer, and other key officials. The Bishop has the discretion to appoint additional members[1].

Geographical Scope

The Diocese of Ontario covers a significant portion of Eastern Ontario, encompassing counties such as Prince Edward, Hastings, Lennox and Addington, Frontenac, and Leeds and Grenville. Major urban centers within the diocese include Kingston, Belleville, Brockville, and Trenton[4].

History

The Diocese of Ontario was established in 1862 when it separated from the Diocese of Toronto. Initially, it included the area now covered by the Diocese of Ottawa until 1896[4]. The first bishop was John Travers Lewis, who was the first bishop consecrated in Canada rather than England[4].
