Jasper-Yellowhead Historical Society

The Jasper-Yellowhead Historical Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving the cultural and historical heritage of the Jasper region in Alberta, Canada.

History

Established in 1963 as the Jasper Historical Society, it later became known as the Jasper-Yellowhead Historical Society. Its early projects included collaborations with Jasper National Park to install commemorative plaques and protect historical sites such as Athabasca Pass, Palisades Ranch, and the Pocahontas cemetery. In 1977, the society was registered as a non-profit charitable organization.

Mission and Objectives

The main objectives of the Jasper-Yellowhead Historical Society are to study and preserve the history of Alberta and Canada, with a focus on the Jasper area. This includes collecting and preserving narratives from original inhabitants like missionaries, fur traders, explorers, and settlers. The society also aims to identify, preserve, and mark local historical sites.

Establishment of the Jasper Yellowhead Museum and Archives

In pursuit of its mission, the society began efforts to establish a museum in 1978. By 1985, it had acquired a partially completed building on Pyramid Lake Road, and by 1990, the lower floor was completed to house the society's office and archives. The main gallery and retail space were opened in 1992.

Museum Exhibits

The Jasper Yellowhead Museum & Archives serves as a primary platform for the society to fulfill its objectives. It features exhibits on the fur trade, the development of the railway, early exploration, and the growth of tourism in Jasper National Park. Notable artifacts include Curly Phillips' canoe, vintage musket balls, remnants of the Pocahontas coalmine, and an historical ice axe from Mt. Alberta. The museum also offers an interpretive exhibit on the history and heritage of Jasper's Indigenous and Métis peoples.

Operations

Today, the society operates the museum, providing a rich and engaging historical experience for visitors. It offers a glimpse into almost 200 years of Canadian heritage through its diverse collections and exhibits. The museum is open to the public year-round, catering to both local and international visitors interested in the natural and human history of Jasper.
